RUBAU, in a joint venture with Romero Polo, has been awarded the reurbanization works of La Rambla in the stretch from Santa Madrona to the Liceu, in the Ciutat Vella district. The intervention, with a planned duration of 32 months, aims to enhance and reclaim La Rambla as a civic space.
The transformation of the famous Rambla of Barcelona began in 2022 with the first section of remodeling from the Columbus monument to Santa Madrona, which was also awarded to Rubau and is currently in the final phase of construction. Recently, BIMSA tendered the rest of the Ramblas in two lots: from Plaza Catalunya to the Liceu (lot 1) and from the Liceu to Santa Madrona (lot 2).
Rubau’s proposal with Romero Polo for this last stretch must be coordinated with lot 1. In the first 10 months, the Gothic side will be reurbanized, diverting the direction towards Plaza Catalunya along the opposite roadway and eliminating motorized traffic towards the sea, which will have to go through Via Laietana. In the following 10 months, the Raval side will be reurbanized, redirecting the direction towards Plaza Catalunya on its final roadway built in the previous phase and continuing with the annulled traffic towards the sea. Finally, 12 months will be allocated to carry out the works of the central promenade.
The new configuration will have only one lane up and one down, with an additional lane for loading and unloading in certain sections. The side sidewalks will be significantly widened, while the central promenade will be widened to a lesser extent. Most of the iconic plane trees will be preserved, but all the current pavement will be replaced by granite pieces of different shades, both on sidewalks and roadways. The installation of anti-terror bollards – some retractable – at all crossings is also planned. The main challenge of the project will be the compatibility of the work with traffic – both motorized and pedestrian – with kiosks, terraces, shops, and theaters.
At Grupo RUBAU, we take pride in being able to carry out the execution of the works on the most iconic promenade of the city, turning it into a comfortable, green, friendly, and cultural civic space.
